Dick Clark

Really sad news in the entertainment industry today.  Dick Clark passed away today.  So you may be asking how that deserves a rant, right?  Well as I believe I have stated before, I can probably complain about anything and usually do!

I have spoken in the past about the coverage that celebrity deaths get versus people who really matter (Google+ Link but Public so you can view it).  The death of Dick Clark is a little different because he did really make changes to the lives of millions of people.  He changed the way a lot of things were done in a positive way.  So in that sense I don't think that coverage of his death was unwarranted on the world news.  His accomplishments were numerous and a great help in shaping the world of television.

What I did find unwarranted was the amount of coverage though.  The first 10 minutes was all about him, nothing else.  And if that wasn't enough, they did another 5 minute story about him later in the broadcast!  No mention of stupid things like Georgia police handcuffing a kindergartner for a tantrum.  Nope, they don't care about real news stories, just what is going to be a hot topic.

They should have mentioned his death and perhaps done a 5 minute story about him.  After that they should have plugged a show about his life (as we all know there will be) and/or directed the viewer to their website for further coverage.  How about other things that happened in the world?  The directors for these news agencies need to get their priorities straight.  Show news stories, not celebrity news.  There are plenty of those shows that I can avoid since they never have anything I'm interested in!
