Rental Trucks

So last night I spent the evening loading a rental truck because my mother is moving.  And I spent today unloading that truck.  I wasn't able to watch any television so you might think I don't really have much to rant about, right?  Well you would be wrong as you can probably guess.

So she rented a truck from Budget this time but this really applies to the last truck that she rented a few years ago.  They are really junk!  The one that she had this time really took the cake though.  We were in the process of swapping her futon for our couch as the futon was really too big for her new place.  While driving the check engine light came on then it was followed by a real strange noise followed by a really bad vibration.  Then it would disappear in the opposite order just as suddenly as it started.  Along with this it would lose all ability to accelerate.  My brother started looking around for information on maintenance (he is aware of the need as he drives for a living) and found a couple.  One stated that the preventative maintenance hadn't been done for almost a year and the other stated it was due for something about 15000 miles prior to when we were driving it.  I can't remember what the second sticker was for but it was important with regards to whether or not the vehicle was safe to drive.  But while looking he noticed that he could see the road through a crack behind my seat.

This made me realize why these trucks always have an out of state license plate on them.  It isn't that someone moves to Syracuse that often, in fact for the most part people are moving out of Syracuse.  The real thing is that they are just moving the trucks from state to state.  This allows them to play the system.  I can only assume that in a month this truck will be in another state so they don't have to get it inspected.  Think about it, when you move to another state you have a certain amount of time before your plates expire and you need to get the car inspected.  These companies are taking advantage of that by moving the trucks to another state just before that time limit and thus starting the cycle over again.

Something needs to be done about this process before someone gets seriously injured or worse due to a truck that shouldn't be driven.  There should be a law that prevents it but I suppose there would probably be a different loophole that would be "accidentally" put in.

  1. Did the truck recently come from the South and the crack was the AC?
