Is That the Best Thing to Do?

There wasn't much on the news (local or world) other then coverage of hurricane Sandy.  I'm not sure about the local news in your area but here it is a 90 minute program.  For the first time ever the first 20 minutes of the program aired without commercials, it was all about the hurricane.  Then the world news decided to have an hour long special, the first 30 minutes of that were devoted to hurricane coverage.  I stopped watching because apparently nothing else happened in the world today.  But all of this lead to something that I may have griped about before but it needs to be said once again.

Yep, nothing else happened in the world and not much else happened in central New York either.  What a load of crap.  I get that this storm is huge - something like 175 miles in diameter - and that it will effect a very large portion of the population of the east coast, but that kind of coverage is ridiculous!  But what really bothered me is that they had several reporters in evacuation zones.  Why do we need to have people at the street level of these places?  Instead of putting people in harms way, spend the money on stationary cameras that you can mount and leave.  Rent a hotel room and mount several of them on the balcony!  The hotels would love to have a room being paid for as well as the plugs that come with it.  Want several angles, rent several rooms in the hotel or in multiple hotels.  It's not rocket science people!  By sending these reporters into the heart of the storm you are risking their lives (voluntarily I can only assume) and potentially the lives of the rescuers that may have to go in and save them.

Now if that isn't bad enough, they went around randomly knocking on doors and actually found people in areas where there were mandatory evacuation orders!  This one woman that they spoke with was, I believe, in Atlantic City.  As of 2pm this afternoon they had it narrowed down to something like an 85% chance that it would hit Atlantic City or within 10 miles of it.  When this reporter was speaking with the woman she had walked up to the house through a foot of water.  The woman then told the reporter that they made arrangements with her upstairs neighbor so that if the water came into the house she would move her family upstairs.  Come on idiot!  There was a mandatory evacuation order given for a reason.  Personally if it wasn't for the fact that her family included children I would say to let her sit on the roof until the water subsides.  What I think tops it off is morons like this will make this choice then wonder why her taxes are getting higher.  Here's a hint stupid, because of having to spend the cash to rescue you and other idiots like yourself your state is activating more National Guard members and they expect to get paid to put their life on the line.  And why do they have to do that?  Pretty simple, because you are too stupid to believe that a hurricane might hit your house.  There are two things that these people will complain about before taxes are just as stupid.  They would be the first to whine and cry if someone in their family died as a result of their decision to stay.  The other thing that they would complain about the fact that their home was flooded and their insurance company told them that they didn't have flood insurance.  And when you live on an island that is at best 10 feet above sea level you're a real idiot if you don't have flood insurance!

Decisions like this are just stupid and really resource intense.  There is no reason that we need to have a reporter on the ground for things like this.  With all of the technology that we have we shouldn't be putting people at risk like this.
